Cougars Drop Season Opener to Roane State

Cleveland State Baseball opened their season on Monday, losing to Roane State by a score of 4-3.

The scoring started off in the top of the 3rd inning when Noah Peterson lined a double into the outfield sending Trey Vanderpool to third. Vanderpool ended up scoring off an error made by the Roane State right fielder. Roane State quickly answered in the following inning tying the game up at 1 a piece. The tie breaking run didn't coming until the 8th inning when Cameron Hankins reached first base off an error, allowing Trey Martin to score. Hankins followed this by securing the only stolen base of the game. Shortly after, Brandon Mason also reached base off a Roane State error allowing Cameron Hankins to cross home plate. Roane State responded by scoring 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the 8th inning. After a quick ninth inning, the game ended as a Roane State victory with a score of 4-3.

Right handed pitcher Tyler Zak of Cleveland State took the loss while Logan Peterson had two hits on the day. In total, Cleveland State scored 3 runs off of 7 hits with one RBI, 3 walks and 9 strikeouts. The Cougars will look to bounce back as they take on Gordon State College on the road on Friday, February 9th at 2:00 PM.
