Lady Cougars Sweep West Georgia

Cleveland State softball (0-0, 4-1) travelled to Carrolton GA on Sunday, February 18 and won two games vs. West Georgia Technical Community College by scores of 1-0 and 7-1.

Game one featured Cougar pitcher Shiann Stockwell twirling a 1-hit shutout, winning her 3rd game of the young season.  The Cougar's lone run came in the top of the 7th inning when Emily Yell scored on a two out single off the bat of Sadie Coons.  Yell reached 1st base by a fielders choice as Baylee Woods who had reached by a shortstop error was forced out at second.  Yell moved up to second when pinch hitter Cortney Mooneyham laced a first pitch single into left field, setting up the heroics by Coons.

Stockwell would shut down West GA in the bottom of the 7th with a strikeout and inducing a ground out and pop out to herself to end the game.  On the game Hailey Galvan, Grayson Brown, Macy Bryant, Mooneyham and Coons each had one hit.

In game two Cleveland State jumped on the boards with six first inning runs highlighted by a 2-run double off the bat of Mooneyham and a 3-run homer by catcher Tori Ogle.  Starting pitcher Bekah Copas who won her first game of the season entered the hit parade by driving in Bryant who had singled, with a single up the middle.  The Cougars sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning with seven hits and one walk.

Copas would scatter six hits on the game with the support of a 13 hit attack by her Cougar teammates.  The Cougars 7th run came in the 4th inning when Mooneyham struck again driving in Bryant with a single, who had doubled off the centerfield wall.

Brown had three hits along with Mooneyham while Bryant and Ogle each had two.  Rachel Pierce, Copas and Coons rounded out Cleveland State hitting with one hit each.

Cougar Softball home opener is slated for Friday, February 23 with the doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m. vs. perennial National Tournament participant Lake Land College from Illinois.
