Cougars Sweep Twinbill Against West Georgia Tech

Cleveland State Baseball (24-14, 6-9) hosted a doubleheader against West Georgia Tech on Tuesday, sweeping the Golden Knights with a final score of 7-4 in game one and 6-5 in game two.

Jackson Etter was on the mound in game one for the Cougars, pitching 4 innings, allowing 2 earned runs and 3 walks while striking out 5. Etter received the win, moving his season record to 6-0. Noah Peterson pitched a scoreless 7th inning to secure the save for Cleveland State. This was Peterson's first save of the season. 

The Cougars scored 7 runs off of 11 hits while only striking out twice. Hunter Oliver and Cameron Payne each smacked a home run against the Golden Knights while Rhett Baldwin and Trey Vanderpool each hit a double. Noah Hill, Brandon Mason, Logan Peterson, Joey Roberson and Rhett Baldwin each had an RBI on the day. The Cougars were also quick on the basepath as Oliver, Vanderpool, and Hankins each finished with a stolen base. On the defensive side, the Cougars finished game one with no errors committed in the 7-4 victory over West Georgia Tech.

Game two resulted in a 6-5 Cougar victory. Corey Linz was on the mound for Cleveland State, pitching 4 innings, allowing 5 earned runs and 3 walks while striking out 10. Collin Grove entered the game in relief, pitching 2 innings, striking out every batter he faced. Grove received the win in game two, moving his record to 2-3. Greg Tye entered in the 7th inning and secured his 5th save of the season.

Cleveland State scored 6 runs off of 5 hits thanks to RBI's by Noah Hill, Hunter Oliver, Hooper Mills, Caleb Collins, and Sean Coakley. Hooper Mills had a home run in the game while Noah Hill, Noah Peterson, and Sean Coakley each had a double. 

The Golden Knights started off game two with a 2-run 1st inning, starting off fast against the Cougars. Cleveland State responded with a run in the 2nd and 3rd innings to tie the game up at 2 apiece. The 4th inning saw 3 runs from West Georgia Tech and only 1 run from the Cougars, moving the score to 5-3 in favor of the Golden Knights. After a scoreless 5th innings, Cleveland State found themselves still trailing 5-3 in the 6th inning. With 2 on and 1 out in the bottom of the 6th inning, Caleb Collins grounds out to the Golden Knight shortstop but scores Hooper Mills in the process. With Trey Martin now on 3rd base with 2 outs, Sean Coakley steps up to the plate and doubles, scoring Martin. With the game tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the 6th with 2 outs, Cameron Payne enters the game to pinch run for Coakley. Noah Hill steps up and ropes a single, scoring Payne to take a 6-5 Cougar lead. Cleveland State closes out the top of the 7th inning and completes the comeback and the sweep, winning game two 6-5.

The sweep moves the Cougars record to 24-14 (6-9). Cleveland State will look to continue in the win column as they take on Volunteer State in a 3-game series at home starting on Friday, April 6th at 1:00 PM.
