Cougars Escape Round 1 With Win Over Dyersburg

Cleveland State baseball took on Dyersburg State in round one of the District VII Tournament, winning the game by a score of 7-6. 

Jackson Etter was on the starter for the Cougars, pitching 7 innings, allowing 4 earned runs, 1 walk while striking out 4. Greg Tye came on in relief and pitched the final 2 innings, striking out 4 batters and receiving the win.

Dyersburg struck first in round one, when an RBI double gave them a 1-0 lead over the Cougars. After a scoreless 2nd inning, Cleveland State added a run of their own when Noah Hill scored off of a Dyersburg State error. By the time the 5th inning arrived, Dyersburg had taken a 6-1 lead over the Cougars. The 6th inning saw no runs by either team but Cleveland State started their comeback attempt in the 7th when Trey Vanderpool scored off of a Caleb Collins RBI double. Continuing into the 8th inning, Cleveland State put up 3 more runs when Caleb Collins, Rhett Baldwin and Joey Roberson all scored off of anothe Dyersburg State error. Entering into the 9th inning trailing 5-6, Cleveland State found themselves in a tight situation. Rhett Baldwin steps up the plate in the 9th and ropes an RBI single, scoring Joey Roberson and advancing Noah Peterson to second base, tying the game at 6-6. The Cougars then proceeded to walk off round one when Noah Peterson scored the winning run off of a Dyersburg State wild pitch. 

In total, the Cougars had 14 hits, 7 runs scored, 2 RBI's, and 5 walks. Hunter Oliver, Rhett Baldwin and Caleb Collins each finished the game with a double while Rhett Baldwin and Caleb Collins each had an RBI. 

Cleveland State will face No. 1 Walters State in round two of the District VII tournament on Tuesday, May 7th at 4:30PM. Game will be played at Chattanooga State Community College.
