Lady Cougars Advance to Semi-Finals

Lady Cougars Advance to Semi-Finals

With an 8-0 six inning win over Roane State on Monday, May 6 of the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association Region 7 Tournament, Cleveland State softball (25-20, 15-17) advanced to the semi-finals scheduled on Tuesday, May 8 at 5: 30 p.m.  The Cougars used the one hit pitching of Shiann Stockwell who won her 17th game of the season vs. a Lady Raider team who had beaten the tournament's #1 seed, Chattanooga State earlier in the day.

The Cougars wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard, plating two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning using four hits of what was to be a game high14 hit attack. Stockwell singled, moved to second on a Rachel Pierce single, who then both scored after a Grayson Brown sacrifice bunt and a two run RBI double laced to left center by Macy Bryant.

In the 2nd Cleveland State added three more runs to the score making it 5-0, sending eight batters to the plate, adding to their hit total on an inning lead-off single by Baylee Woods, and RBI singles one out later by Stockwell, Grayson Brown and  Bryant.

With the bases loaded in the 3rd Pierce was hit by a pitch to drive in the sixth run of the game for the Cougars.  An error put Woods on first base followed by a walk to Emily Yell, a fielder's choice putting Sadie Coons on first, Stockwell's third hit of the game and finally the Pierce hit by pitch scoring the run.

Stockwell who struck out four did not give up a hit until the top of the 6th.  Reaching on the infield hit Roane State stranded their inning runner and the Cougars ended the game by scoring two runs for the final 8-0 score.  Cleveland State loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the 6th on singles by Brown, Bryant and Cortney Mooneyham setting up an RBI single by Hailey Galvan and the game winning hit by Woods.

On the game Stockwell and Bryant led the way with three hits each, while Brown, Mooneyham and Galvan each had two hits, with Pierce and Woods each chipping in with one.

The Cougars now await the Tuesday, May 8 winner of a quarter final game between #2 seed Walters State and #3 seed Volunteer State scheduled to be played at 10 a.m.

Games are played on the campus of Chattanooga State.  Admission is $7 per day or a $20 tournament pass.
