Around 125 student athletes from Cleveland State Community College volunteered their time to clean up downtown Cleveland on Friday.
This cleanup was done in partnership with Cleveland/Bradley Keep America Beautiful, the Cleveland Public Works Department and Cleveland Pickers, a local group dedicated to keeping the city clean.
Students and other community partners met at First Street Square and spread out to cover five heavily-traveled downtown blocks. These were areas surrounding landmarks such as Johnston Park, the Old Woolen Mill and the Museum Center at Five Points.
"This was all of Cleveland State's athletic teams coming together with other partners to clean up the city," said Amanda Peels, executive director of KAB. "It was another way to help keep our community clean, green and thriving."
As they combed their way through the city blocks, students picked up litter and pulled weeds to make sure the areas they covered were left both cleaner and neater-looking than before.
Peels said this event helped improve the look of downtown Cleveland and also gave the students and community partners a chance to rally around a common cause.
The KAB leader offered her thanks to everyone who helped make the event successful. She added the organization plans to help plan more community cleanup events in the future.
