Baseball Sweeps Dyersburg to Win Series

Baseball swept Dyersburg State in Dyersburg, Tenn. in two games on Saturday to secure a series win over the Eagles in their final regular season series of the 2019 season.

In the first game, the Cougars won 6-3. SP Ethan Walls pitched six innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five to record the victory. A five-run sixth inning powered Cleveland State to the victory. In the crucial inning, 1B Marcial Hernandez (1-for-4) drove in LF Lance Dockery (2-for-4) and then scored on a wild pitch. Then, DH Brock Browning (1-for-3) drove in 2B Andrew Carpenter and scored on an error that allowed RF Reid Nelson to reach base. To cap off the scoring outburst, SS Jonathan Hickman (2-for-3) hit a solo home run.

In the second game, they won in a more narrow 5-4 victory over the Eagles. Hickman scored the game winning run, advancing to home on a passed ball in the top of the final frame, while also posting a complete game win on the mound. CF Tucker Mendenhall (2-for-4) had two RBI and C Alex Coulter was 2-for-3 in the game.

The Cougars will now await their TCCAA tournament fate as the brackets are released next week. The tournament, which takes place at Columbia State, will run from May 5-11.
