PREVIEW: Golf Opens Fall Season at Bryan Invitational

Men's Golf will kick off their fall season at Bear Trace Cumberland Mountain in Crossville, Tenn. as they compete in the Bryan College Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

The Cougars are riding high from a fantastic spring, capped off by sending returning sophomore Colbe Cagle to the program's first National Tournament appearance since golf returned to Cleveland State in 2017. The team will hope to continue to build on the momentum brought about by Cagle's success in Plymouth, Ind. this fall.

Cleveland State will also return sophomore Jared Thomas, who also had a solid 2018-2019 campaign. Thomas had the team's lowest score in three different tournaments, while placing second on the Cougar roster in another. He, along with Cagle and fellow sophomores Seth Ward and Garrett Jones, will provide leadership and experience to a Cougar team that features plenty of new faces.

This young 2019-20 roster will feature five freshman. All five found success with their respective high school teams, each appearing in the state tournament at least once. The incoming class also features three locals in Riley Barnes, from Ooltewah's Boyd-Buchanan High School, Gage Brakebill, from Cleveland's Bradley Central High School, Trent Cooper, from Cleveland's Walker Valley High School.

"It's good to finally get the fall season going," said head coach Miles Moesley. "We had a two-week delay after our first tournament was cancelled due to Hurricane Dorian. I've been anxious to see where we are and that's something we can only find out under tournament pressure. We have four freshman starting in our first tournament, but they have a lot of tournament experience. Wes Spillers started off really hot in practice and Gage Brakebill has been playing really well lately. Everyone is working really hard. The first tournament will tell us where we are and what we need to work on."

After their first tournament in Crossville, the Cougars will travel to Georgetown, Ky. for the Georgetown Invitational on Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
