XC Men Place First, Women Race Well at Maryville

The Cleveland State Cross Country teams battled and conquered a tough race heat-wise to have a good showing at the Maryville Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The men's team validated their national ranking of 14 in their 8k, placing first as a team overall. Erik Martinez took second overall with a time of 27:24, with Derek Gallardo and Diego Guzman following closely behind in fourth and fifth with times of 27:58 and 28:01. Riley Higginbotham, Francisco Davis, and David Tullock also cracked the top 20, placing 14th, 19th, 20th overall.

The women also raced well despite the especially difficult heat they faced in their 6k. The Lady Cougars placed fourth overall in the team standings. Angie Torres was the top finisher for Cleveland State, crossing the line with a time of 29:39 to place 18th overall. Sadie Lane recorded a new personal-best, finishing in 31:34 to knock four minutes off of her time.

Both teams will next race on Oct. 19 in Rome, Ga. as they compete in the Berry Invitational. Meet time is set for 9:00 ET.
