Softball enters into a weekend series at Volunteer State on Friday on a high note. They are have won four out of their last five games, including earning a 2-1 series victory over the TCCAA's second-best team, Walters State. Their doubleheader on Friday will start at 5:00 ET and their games on Saturday will begin at 1:00 ET.
Vol State is currently ranked third in the TCCAA. They are 22-15 overall and 14-7 in the conference. They won their last series with Jackson State 3-1 and have won seven of their last nine games.
On offense, the Lady Pioneers have two players batting over .450 on the year. SS Emilee Hanlon is batting .486, good for second in the TCCAA, and also has 28 RBI, 46 runs scored, which leads the TCCAA, and a TCCAA-high 47 stolen bases. 2B Ciera Purvis is batting .453, third in the TCCAA, paired with 15 RBI, 36 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases. OF Hannah Marlar leads the team in RBIs with 38, which is tied for fourth in the TCCAA. On the mound, Tara Cates leads the TCCAA with a 1.90 ERA in 62.2 IP and has struck out 48 batters.
Last year, the Lady Cougars split their season series 1-1 with Vol State after two games were cancelled due to weather. After this series, Cleveland State will return home to play a weekend series April 19 and 20 with Southwest Tennessee. Their sophomore day will in-between games on Saturday.
