Thompson Speaks at Youth Outreach Event

Women's Basketball head coach Evelyn Thompson was involved in yet another community outreach event on Sunday.

Thompson spoke to those involved with PlaySMARTT, an youth outreach organization led by Dr. David Smartt in Huntsville, Ala, about what steps athletes need to take to play at the collegiate level in their sport. She also helped Dr. Samartt with a scrimmage and practice during her day with the organization.

"This was an opportunity to talk with a group of athletes and their parents about the commitment it takes in the classroom and on the court to get to the next level," Thompson said. "It was also an opportunity to help Coach Smartt and his organization. He does such a tremendous job of helping young people around the Huntsville area. I am so impressed by his commitment and mission. He teaches his athletes life skills that will allow them to be successful. He has had a number of athletes who have gone on the play college basketball."

Aside from serving the athletes and helping them grow on and off the court, Thompson saw the event as a mutually beneficial opportunity. "Being involved with Coach Smartt and his organization also allows us to broaden our recruiting base. We get to see plays from the Huntsville area and they get to learn about Cleveland State and all that we have to offer," she said.
