Cougars Win Season Opener

The Lisa Phillips era at Cleveland State begins with a win.

The Cougars women's basketball team defeated Bryan College 78-64 Wednesday night in Phillips first game as the team's head coach.

"Our team played well and I'm proud of their efforts," Phillips said. "We had some good runs offensively, just needed to do a better job on defensive rotations and securing the boards."

Cleveland State was in charge from the opening tip, going up 30-13 after the first quarter.

Four of the five Cougars starters scored in double figures with Derriona Salter leading the way with a game high 21 points. Latisha Parris and Jarnyria Maddox each added 14 points with Parris also bringing down eight rebounds.

"We will continue to work hard in practice and focus on our next game," Phillips said.

Cleveland State is back in action on Tuesday hosting Calhoun Community College with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
