Cougars Lose Conference Game at Walters State

Cleveland State was without one of its starters and leaders tonight and it showed.

The Cougars were down rebounding leader and typical point guard Latisha Parris this evening.

"Latisha had a concussion and should be back next week," head coach Lisa Phillips said.

Without Parris the Cougars couldn't get the offensive going, losing at Walters State 55-39.

"We struggled offensively not running our sets correctly," Phillips said. "Defensively our effort just wasn't there."

The Senators (2-2, 1-1) totaled 16 steals in the game with the Cougars (3-2, 1-2) turning the ball over 23 times. Walters State turned those turnovers into 18 points, while Cleveland State only got five points off turnovers.

The leading scorer for the Cougars was Jarnyria Maddox putting in 14 on 6-11 shooting to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Jordan McCullough was the only other Cougar to score in double figures with 11 points.

Walters State was led by Asia Barr with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. Kyra Perkins put in 12 points with Briontanay Marshall adding another 10.

The Cougars remain winless on the road while they are undefeated so far at home this season.

Cleveland State looks to get back on track when they take the court again at home hosting Volunteer State (1-8, 0-2) this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
