Cross Country Teams Achieve Strong Marks Saturday

The Cleveland State Cross Country team had a great showing in their preseason tune-up at the Race To Achieve 5K on Saturday, Aug. 24.

On the men's side, the Cougars had the top seven spots. Erik Martinez led the way with a time of 16:21, placing first overall. Derek Gallardo placed second overall, with a time of 16:35, and Diego Guzman placed third overall with a mark of 16:39. Luis De Le Pena, Riley Higginbotham, David Tullock, and Francisco Davis rounded up the rest of the top seven with times of 17:55, 18:00, 18:03, and 19:28 respectively.

On the women's side, Angie Torres had the top time for the Lady Cougars, running a 25:09 mark. Sadie Lane, Jordan Wagers, Alexis Kyle, and Lydia Hollis all ran sub-30:00 times, with Lane breaking the 27:00 minute mark.

The 5K is put on by the Junior Achievement of the Ocoee Region, and raises money to help K-12 students in the area succeed in the classroom.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday at Covenant College's Mountaintop Invitational for their first meet of the season. The women's race, beginning at 6:00 ET, will start the festivities.
