The Cougars (22-9, 7-6) took the Senators (34-6, 11-2) to task, picking up a 9-4 win.
"We had a good win today, with great starting pitching from Hooper Mills that was backed up by the bullpen. Elijah Haynie and Greg Tye came in and gave us two scoreless innings," declared head coach Mike Policastro.
"Our Offense was led by John Hennen and Chase Fullington, who had three hits apiece. We were able to have multiple scoring innings throughout the game."
The series between Cleveland State and Walters State continues Saturday with a doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m.
The Cougars took a 3-0 after the first inning, which became a 3-0 lead by the end of the fourth.
Walters State scored their first two runs in the top of the fifth and the home team answered with a run of their own to keep a 5-2 lead.
The Senators picked up a run in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Cougars scored two runs in each inning to take their 9-4 lead.
Hennen was 3-for-5 at the plate, which included a homerun and a triple for two RBIs. Fullington went 3-for-3 and had an RBI, with two of his hits being doubles.
John Sharpe had two RBIs and Devon Gardner drove in a run of his own.
Mills (5-3) gave up five hits and two earned runs in seven innings.
