Tight Games for Cougs at Jackson State Saturday

Baseball had a 1-1 split in their doubleheader with Jackson State on Saturday in Jackson, Tenn. to secure a 2-1 series win.

 

GAME 1- Cleveland State 3, Jackson State 2

Baseball started off the day with a 3-2 win over the Green Jays. 

The first four in the order were crucial to the victory. Andrew Carpenter, who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third, also scored a run. In the fifth, Courtney Payne drove in the tying run for the Cougars, also driving in the run on a sacrifice fly, while Alex Ray drove in the go-ahead run in the same inning with a single. Jonathan Hickman, batting third, was two-for-three with a walk.

On the mound, Kaleb Orr earned his second win of the season with a solid start, allowing no earned runs in five innings of work and striking out a career-high nine batters. Bradley Hayes recorded the save, striking out one and allowing no hits in two innings.

 

GAME 2- Cleveland State 2, Jackson State 3

In the second game of the day, the Cougars lost in a tight 3-2 contest with the Green Jays.

Blake Bryan had one of Cougars' two RBIs in the game, driving in a run with a double in the fourth. Ray again drove in a run for Cleveland State, scoring Payne on a double in the seventh. Lance Dockery was two-for-three on the day.

Hickman had a great start for the Cougars, allowing three earned runs and striking out a career-high ten batters.



Baseball will be back in action on Monday as they host Sinclair at Cougar Field. First pitch in the single-game vs. the Tartan Pride is scheduled for 2:00 ET.
