Strong Offense Powers Lady Cougs at Jackson State

Softball split their two-game set with the Lady Green Jays In Jackson, Tenn. on Saturday. The split also brought them into a 2-2 tie in the series with Jackson State.

 

GAME 1- Cleveland State 19, Jackson State 5

In the first game of the day, the Lady Cougars exploded offensively to secure a 19-5 win over the Lady Green Jays.

After finding themselves down 3-0 early, Cleveland State stormed back. They scored all of their 19 runs in and after the fifth inning, scoring 13 alone in the sixth.

Hannah Turner and Haley Fair both hit their first home runs of the season. Both Turner and Amber Atkins also had five hit games. 

On the mound, Macy Smith made her first collegiate start, contributing three strong innings of work. Kaylee Cornelius earned the win in relief, pitching four solid innings.

 

GAME 2- Cleveland State 10, Jackson State 14

In the second game on the day, both teams put up huge run totals, but ultimately, the Lady Cougars suffered a 14-10 loss.

The game was neck-and-neck until the fifth inning, but the Lady Green Jays put together an eight-run inning to build a 12-6 lead. Cleveland State put together a nice comeback to make the score 12-10, but ultimately, Jackson State's lead was too much to overcome.

Atkins had another big game offensively for the Lady Cougars, recording two hits and two walks.

Softball will be back in action tomorrow as they play a doubleheader vs. Lake Land. Their home opener will begin at 12:00 ET.
