Lady Cougs Secure Sweep of Roane State

Softball secured a series sweep over Roane State on Saturday, winning both games over the Lady Raiders to win all four games in the set.

 

GAME 1- Cleveland State 6, Roane State 4

Cleveland State's bats came alive in the middle of the contest to guide the Lady Cougars to a 6-4 win over Roane in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The biggest innings of the game were the fourth and fifth, where Cleveland State scored two and three runs, respectively. 

Kristen Sharp had a huge two-run home run in the fifth, the first of her collegiate career. She was two-for-three with two runs scored and two RBI on the day. Kati Kennedy was also two-for-three in the contest, driving in a run and scoring one of her own. Both Hannah Turner and Haley Fair also had multi-hit games, while Katie Davis also had an RBI for the Lady Cougars.

Macy Smith earned the win in a solid start, allowing just three earned runs and striking out three over five innings of work. Kaylee Cornelius picked up the save, allowing just one hit and one earned run in two innings.

 

GAME 2- Cleveland State 6, Roane State 1

The Lady Cougars then used solid pitching and timely offense to win the fourth and final game of the series. 

Cornelius started the contest and contributed five solid innings of one run, two strikeout softball for the win. Anna Yell came in in relief and allowed no runs and just one hit over two innings to close out the game strong for the Lady Cougars. 

All of the Lady Cougar runs came via home runs. Turner, Amber Atkins and Kat Cechini all hit it out of the park for Cleveland State in the game. Turner was one-for-one with two runs scored, two RBIs, and two walks in the game. Atkins was one-for-two with a run scored and three RBI, while Cechini was one-for-three with an RBI and a run scored. Yell also was a key contributor on offense, going two-for-four with a run scored at the plate.



The Lady Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Glen Oaks Community College in a doubleheader. That doubleheader is set to begin at 2:00 ET.
