
#1 Walters State Captures TCCAA Women's Basketball Title
#1 Walters State claims an undefeated season in conference and the 2019 TCCAA Women's Basketball title with a 58-51 win over Chattanooga State. They will travel to Lubbock, Texas to play in the NJCAA National Championship March 18-23 at the Rip Griffin Center. The bracket along with the seeding for the national tournament will be announced on 11:00 ET on Monday, March 11.
Chattanooga State started the game on a 5-0 run, highlighted by Mackenzie Trouten's three-pointer, and lead 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. They led until the 7:53 mark of the second quarter, when Lady Senator Zacharyia Esmon converted an and-one to tie the game at 14-14.
Walters State claimed their first lead of the game with a Jalayah Manning jump shot made with 3:42 left in the half. The Senators lead 23- 21 going into the locker room.
The game remained close in the third quarter, as neither team led by more than two points until Jamya Rogers converted an and-one to put Walters State up 36-32 at the 40.1 mark. They lead 39-34 going into the final frame of play.
In the fourth, after Manning stole the ball and feeded a nice pass to Esmon for the score, Walters State began to gain momentum offensively and eventually built their lead up to eight and pulled away with 6:27 left to go in the game.
Esmon lead all scorers with 22.
