Cougars Walk-Off, Secure Sweep vs. St. Charles Saturday

Baseball secured a series sweep over St. Charles at home on Saturday, defeating the Cougars twice on Saturday.

GAME 1- Cleveland State 5, St. Charles 4

Cleveland State's first game with the Cougars of St. Charles did not lack drama, as they needed eight innings to decide the outcome. Courtney Payne, who also had three walks on the day, scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

The game was back and forth, with both sets of Cougar teams trading off 3 run and 1 run innings in the first four frames of the game to find themselves in a 4-4 tie, but then neither team scored any runs again until Payne's in the eighth.

Parker Hill was two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored in the game. Reese Plemons and Cal Cook also recorded an RBI each in the contest. On the mound, Brennan Davis earned his first win of the year, allowing no earned runs in two innings of work and striking out two. Both Jared Young and Bradley Hayes also tossed a scoreless inning and a third and one inning, respectively.

GAME 2- Cleveland State 5, St. Charles 1

The game that closed out the weekend series was far less dramatic. Cleveland State scored a run in the first and then exploded for four in the third to pull away from St. Charles. Alex Ray drove in the first inning's lone run and then struck again for two RBIs in the third. Alex Coulter also drove in two runs in the huge third inning. Both Ray and Coulter were one-for-three in the contest.

Jonathan Hickman had a solid start on the mound, allowing just one earned run and striking out eight batters in six innings of work, earning him his second win of the season. Justin Morris followed him with a perfect inning of relief along with two strikeouts.

The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday as they host Gordon State in a single-game series. First pitch is set for 2:00 ET.
