After Cleveland State's exciting 2-0 win over Chattanooga State on March 18, they played host to Morton College on Thursday March 23 and swept a doubleheader from the Illinois team with wins of 11-3 and 35-4.
Erin Hollis (1-2) took the win in game one and Haley Hodgson (4-7) was the winner in game two. The Cougars (9-16, 3-13) banged out 48 hits in both games combined, with homeruns from AJ Chancey and Mekala White, two triples from Rachel Pierce, multiple doubles from Grayson Brown, Bre Dunsmore and Chancey, with one double each from Kaley Cagle, Macy Bryant and Emily Banks.
Chancey who had eight hits on the day, Cagle, Banks and Dunsmore with a 6-for-7 at the plate shared RBI honors with six, five, five and four respectively.
Cleveland State travelled to Columbia on Friday March 24 and lost both games of a conference doubleheader vs. the Columbia State Lady Chargers, 7-3 and 5-4.
In game one, the Cougars went in to the seventh inning down 7-0 and scored three runs when Chancey doubled home Bryant who had singled and Brittany Arnold who had been hit by a pitch. Chancey scored on a single by Dunsmore in what would be the final scoring on the late rally by Cleveland State. Erin Hollis took the loss as the Cougars were only able to find three hits, singles by Bryant and Brown and the RBI double by Chancey.
Game two saw the Cougars enter the bottom of the seventh with a three-run lead, only to see the Lady Chargers score four times to pin the loss on starter Hodgson, 5-4. The Cougars scored one in the first when Carly Frost, who had walked to start the game, was driven home by a triple off the bat of Pierce. Cleveland State tacked on three more runs in the third when Brown singled home Mekala White who had started the inning with a walk with Bryant plating Frost and Pierce who had followed with singles of their own.
In the bottom of the seventh, Columbia State sent eight players to the plate in what would lead to the come from behind win.
Cougar hitters in the game were led by Pierce who had three hits including a double and triple. Frost, Brown, Bryant, Hannah Jones and Dunsmore who each banged out a hit.
