
Softball Splits Weekend Conference Games vs Dyersburg and Southwest
Cougar Softball split a home conference weekend series on Friday March 21 and Saturday March 22
losing to Dyersburg State 5-3 and 11-2 while winning against Southwest 9-6 and 11-6.
Currently the Cougars have an overall record of 8-14 and a conference mark of 4-6.
Game One Recap vs Dyersburg
In the 5-3 loss the Cougars found themselves down 3-0 at the end of two innings and were never able
to mount a rally to come back from the deficit. With five hits on the game Cleveland State scored one
in the second inning as Taylor Hancock drove home Layla Pettigrew and two in the sixth when
Pettigrew doubled home Lilly Griffitts and Desiree Nance who had singled and doubled respectively.
Cougar hitting included hits from Carissa Montgomery, Griffitts, Nance, Pettigrew and Hancock.
Game Two Recap vs Dyersburg
Cleveland State managed just three hits in the five inning 11-2 loss with homeruns from Hancock and
Brooklyn Deaver along with a single from Ava Layne.
Game One Recap vs Southwest
After Southwest's half of the first the Cougars found themselves down by four runs but quickly found
the remedy as Layne crushed a grand slam homerun to knot the score at four at the end of the first
inning. Dyersburg answered with two in the third followed by Hancock who belted a homerun leaving
Cleveland State down by one at the end of three.
In the sixth inning Nance and Layne led off with back-to-back homeruns with Hancock and Laila Perry
scoring the final two runs of the game for the Cougars 9-6 win.
Cami Wade pitched 6.1 innings in relief allowing two runs for her first win of the season.
On the game Cleveland State had 14 hits led by Layne who was 3-for-3 followed by Montgomery,
Nance, Hancock and Perry who had two hits each with Griffitts, Heidi Johnson and Milan Pemberton
each chipping in with one.
Game Two Recap vs Southwest
Down by two going in to the bottom of the second, Cleveland State exploded for six runs on RBI's
from Nance, Pettigrew, Montgomery and Skye Eddington for the four run lead. Southwest tied the
scoring at six in the fourth, scoring four runs. Their lead was short lived as Deaver hit a two-out
homerun in the Cougars half of the fourth for the 7-6 lead that they would never relinquish.
In the fifth and sixth innings the Cougars used a two-run double from Destini Jensen, a run scoring
single from Montgomery and finally a double from Pettigrew plating Nance for the final 11-6 win.
Mercedes Brazzell pitched the complete game winning her third on the season.
Cleveland State's 15 hit attack saw six Cougars bang out two hits each; Montgomery, Nance, Layne,
Pettigrew, Johnson and Jensen. Rounding out the rest of the hitting with one each were Deaver,
Hancock and Sky Eddington.
What's Next
The Cougars are scheduled for a home doubleheader vs Pellissippi State on Wednesday March 26
with games scheduled to start at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. EST. Games are played on the campus of
Cleveland State at Cougar Softball Field.
There is an $8 admission charge for fans with no charge for Cleveland State students, administrators,
faculty and staff.
