
Cougars Lose Doubleheader Opener to Calhoun
Cougar Softball opened the 2025 season on the road Tuesday February 4 losing a doubleheader to
Calhoun Community College 9-4 and 7-3. On the day Cleveland State managed seven hits per game
with two extra base hits in game one; a solo homerun by catcher Taylor Hancock and a double by
sophomore Carissa Montgomery.
Game One Recap
Falling behind 3-0 in the first the Cougars bounced back with two in the second inning behind the
Hancock homerun and the Montgomery double driving in Milan Pemberton who singled with two
outs.
Calhoun scored a single run in the third to take a 4-2 lead with the Cougars answering back when
Ava Layne who walked with one out eventually came home to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat
of Heidi Johnson. Cleveland State's last run came in the seventh inning as Pemberton again scored
on a single by Sierra Howard. In the 9-4 loss the Cougars offense consisted of seven hits.
Montgomery and Howard each had two hits while Layla Pettigrew, Hancock and Pemberton had one
hit each. On the game, Howard pitched 3.1 innings and Mercedes Brazzell tossed 2.1 innings in
relief.
Game Two Recap
In game two, Cleveland State sent nine batters to the plate scoring three runs as Pettigrew, Johnson
and Hancock each plated a run for a 3-0 lead. Calhoun came back quick in their half of the first
scoring three of their own to knot the score at three.
That would be it for the Cougar scoring as Calhoun scored one in the third inning and finished with
three more in the sixth for a final score of 7-3.
Cougar starting pitcher Kalie Weaver tossed four innings while relievers Charley Patton and Savanah
Bennett each threw one.
Hancock and Pettigrew had two hits each with Desiree Nance, Layne and Skye Eddington each had
one. Eddington was perfect at the plate with her one hit followed by two walks.
What's Next
Next on the schedule for Cleveland State Softball is a Cougar home double header contest vs
Gadsden State Community College on Saturday February 8 with game times slated for 1:00 and 3:00
p.m. EST. Currently Gadsden is 1-5 on the young season.
Games are played on the Cleveland State campus at the Cougar Softball Field. Admission charge is
$8 per person with no charge to Cleveland State students, faculty and staff.
