
Cougar Softball Suffers Doubleheader Loss to Georgia Highlands
Cleveland State Softball lost a doubleheader to Georgia Highlands on Tuesday, February 15 with
scores of 4-3 and 8-1. The Cougar hits numbered 16 on the day, but were scattered keeping their
score at a minimum.
With a season record of 2-6 leading into conference play, Cleveland State is set to play Columbia
State on February 28 and Jackson State on March 1. For Highlands with the doubleheader win they
moved their record to 13-1.
Game One Recap
Cleveland State sent six players to the plate in their half of the first inning highlighted by a Lilly Griffitts
one out double who came home to score when Layla Pettigrew followed an Ava Layne single with a
single of her own.
Georgia Highlands tied the score at one in the third inning with the Cougars answering quickly with
two in the fifth inning as Carissa Montgomery doubled plating Destini Jensen and Milan Pemberton,
who each singled.
That was it for Cleveland State. Highlands scored two to tie the game in their half of the fifth and won
it 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning with an inside the park homerun.
The Cougars nine hit attack included two each by Griffitts and Jensen and one each off the bats of
Montgomery, Layne, Pettigrew, Heidi Johnson and Pemberton. Sierra Howard went the distance in
the hard luck loss.
Game Two Recap
Layne's first homerun of the season was basically the lone Cougar highlight in game two as they
could only muster seven hits in the 8-1 loss.
Desiree Nance and Taylor Hancock had two hits each while Layne, Jensen and Pemberton each had one.
What's Next
The Cougars are scheduled for road conference doubleheaders vs Columbia State and Jackson
State on February 28 and March 1.
