Final Sets Carry Lady Cougs vs. Chatt State

It was a thrilling match for Cleveland State Volleyball at L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium for sole possession of second place in the TCCAA on Thursday evening, as the Lady Cougars defeated Chattanooga State 3-1.

The Lady Cougars won three straight sets after falling in the first set 25-20. The second set, Cleveland State began to catch fire as they won the set 25-19.

The third set was easily the tightest of the entire match as Cleveland State needed extra points to fend off the Lady Tigers 29-27. The Lady Cougars trailed by as many as four points in the frame at the 22-18 mark, but then came back to score three straight points as Rileigh Barbour service ace tied the game at 22-22. McCoy Hensley's kill prevented Chattanooga State from scoring the set point as they then tied the game at 24-24. After a back and forth ending to the set where neither team seemed to gain an edge, Hensley recorded another kill and Madison Miner posted a service ace to claim the set victory.

The momentum then carried the Lady Cougars to a 25-12 fourth set victory. Cleveland State scored eight straight points in the middle of the set to pull away from the Lady Tigers' attack. Sydney Allen then scored the match-winning point on a kill to secure the victory. In total, Madeline Dasher and Hensley led the team with 12 kills a piece.

"It was a defensive struggle today," said head coach Alizabeth Atnip. "Chattanooga State served tough and our receive struggled early on. Things finally started to click in the final set and we minimized our errors to put together a solid win."

The Lady Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Roane State. Match time is set for 6:30 PM.
