Lady Cougars Take Down Hiwassee in Volleyball Home Opener
Cleveland State defeated Hiwassee College in 3 sets to win their first ever home game in school history.
Last night, our Lady Cougars won their first ever home game in school history against Hiwassee College. In a packed out gym, Cleveland State won the match in 3 straight sets with scores of 25-7 in game 1, 25-16 in game 2 and 25-11 in game 3. It was difficult to imagine that this was Cleveland State's first ever women's volleyball team as they showed flashes of a well seasoned program. With a full home crowd and the pressure to do well in their first official showing, the Lady Cougars cruised on their way to a convincing win, setting the tone for the rest of the season.
Coach Randy Evans said, "It felt great to get out there and get a solid win in our first official match. We looked good in our scrimmage against Tennessee Wesleyan last week but its much more rewarding knowing we're adding a game to the win column for the season. It was a great way to start the season in front of a fantastic crowd, we really appreciated everyone who came out and supported us in our first match."
Assistant Coach Alizabeth Atnip also added, "I think it went well, during practice we had developed a solid game plan and I think that you could see our girls execute that. Some of the strong points in our game last night was our serving and being able to run consistent plays that translated into points for our team. We did take good note of some of our flaws and things we can work on, and that will be the focus in our practices this coming week. But as a brand new program here at Cleveland State is was awesome to show people who may have never watched volleyball just how complex the game is. We had an amazing crowd and I think we made a very good first impression in our season opening match."
Up next, the Lady Cougars will be traveling to Rossville, Georgia to compete in the Georgia Northwestern Technical College Tournament. They will have two games today (August 25th) at 4:00PM & 6:00PM and two more matches tomorrow (August 26th) at 11:00 AM & 2:00 PM.
