
CSCC Baseball Sweeps Bryan College
Cleveland State (22-11, 6-6) swept Bryan College in Monday's doubleheader.
Game one ended in a mercy ruling with the Cougars defeating the Lions, 15-5. Ryan Inches was on the mound for Cleveland State, pitching 3 innings, allowing 0 earned runs while striking out 4. Lucas Sykes came on in relief, pitching 2 innings, allowing 1 earned run while also striking out four batters.
Cleveland State started off game one with an 8 run first inning. Hunter Oliver started things off with a 3-run home run, scoring Brandon Mason and Noah Hill. Next, Joey Roberson hit a sacrifice fly to score Logan Peterson. Sean Coakley then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Rhett Baldwin. After a stolen base by Trey Vanderpool, Noah Hill steps up to the plate and smacks an RBI double, scoring Vanderpool and Cameron Hankins. Brandon Mason followed with an RBI double of his own, scoring Noah Hill to extend the Cougar's lead to 8-0. Cleveland State added two more runs to their lead in the 2nd inning thanks to a Trey Vanderpool triple, which scored Cameron Hankins and Logan Peterson. The Lions answered with 4 runs of their own in the 3rd inning but it wasn't enough as the Cougars added two more to their total as a result from a Cameron Hankins RBI triple and Trey Vanderpool RBI single. The Lions again attempted the comeback, scoring only 1 run in the 5th inning. Cleveland State kept on rolling, adding two more runs thus ending the game in a 15-5 mercy ruling.
Overall the Cougars had 15 runs off of 12 hits with 15 RBI's while holding Bryan College to only 3 hits in the game.
Game two of the doubleheader was scoreless until the bottom of the 2nd inning when the Cougars put up 4 runs to take a 4-0 lead. Hooper Mills hit an RBI double, scoring Logan Peterson. Caleb Collins followed with an RBI single, scoring Cameron Payne and Hooper Mills. Trey Martin then got on base, stole third base and score off an error by the Bryan College catcher. The Cougars continued to extend their lead in the 3rd and 4th innings, scoring 4 runs thanks to a Cameron Payne 2 RBI single and a pair of sacrifice flyouts by Noah Peterson and Hunter Oliver. After a scoreless 5th inning, the Lions put up a single run of their own to cut the lead to 8-1 in favor of Cleveland State. The ball did not stop rolling for the Cougars, as they ended the game in another mercy ruling by adding 3 more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Hunter Oliver scored Tucker Mendenhall with an RBI single while Noah Peterson and Hunter Oliver both scored off an error by the Lions 2nd baseman.
Overall, the Cougars had 11 runs on 9 hits with 8 total RBIs.
The sweep moves the Cougars record to 22-11 (6-6). Cleveland State will look to stay in the win column as they travel to Walters State in a 3 game series starting on Thursday, March 29th.
