Cougars Sweep Jackson State
Cleveland State is back above .500 in conference play after sweeping Jackson State this weekend.
The Cougars (12-14, 8-7) ten run ruled the Green Jays (7-19, 0-12) in a shut-out to start the series, then won game two 12-3 in the second game of the double header before finishing the sweep in game three on Friday, 9-1.
"Good team wins and got really good pitching," Cleveland State head baseball coach Aaron Bryant said. "We were able to play our style of offense and guys executed well."
In game one Adam Baker (1-1) pitched a complete game one hit shutout, although it lasted just five innings due to a ten-run rule. He struck out eight batters while walking just one.
Caleb Gipson doubled for Cleveland's only extra base hit on the game, but eight players drove runs in with first baseman Nelson McKnight and shortstop Jon Jon Read each hitting home a pair and scoring twice. The team went 11-22 overall at the plate.
Max Owens (2-3) earned the victory in game two allowing three earned runs in four innings on three hits while walking six and striking out three. Braden Suggs picked up his first save of the season finishing the final three innings allowing no runs on one hit while striking out two and walking a batter.
Third baseman Aiden McClary, second baseman Brogan Jones and left fielder/center fielder Nate Severance each doubled. Severance drove in three runs while designated hitter Evan Goins also hit in three of his own.
Game three saw Turner Junkins (3-3) strike out 12 batters in seven innings on his way to earning a victory allowing no earned runs on one hit while walking a batter. Tyler Pickens and Eric Enerlich each pitched an inning shutting out the Green Jays.
Jones doubled two times in the game going 3-3 while driving in three, scoring twice and walking once. McKnight drove in two more giving him five RBI on the weekend.
The Cougars have a double header this Wednesday hosting Brett Carroll Academy with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The two teams played a double header on February 18 with Cleveland State winning both of those games.
