BASKETBALL'S MAURICE DICKSON SIGNS WITH PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY

Maurice Dickson, a versatile sophomore swing player from Memphis, has chosen to continue his academic and athletic career at University of Pikeville in Kentucky.  The 6'7" Dickson chose the Bears over several schools who were recruiting him for his versatile skill set. Dickson has been on the Cleveland State campus for three years as he missed his middle year due to a preseason knee injury which forced him to redshirt during the 2019-2020.  He was a key member of the 2018-2019 team that won the Cougars their first Region Tournament Championship in 30 years.

During his freshman year, he appeared in 28 of the Cougars 32 contests, starting in 21 games.  He averaged 9.5 points a game that season.  He connected on 45.1 % of his shots from the field and was 65% from the free throw line.  He averaged 5.5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1.1 steals per game during the year.  The Cougars went 16-16 that year, advancing to the National Tournament where they became the first #24 seed to advance to the second round by upsetting Casper College in the first round.

As a sophomore this past season, he started in 17 of the 18 games this year.  He was named to the All TCCAA first team as he averaged 10.9 points per game.  He was 44.6% from the field and 74.7% from the free throw line.  He averaged 4.6 rebounds, 0.5 assist, and 1.1 steals per game.  He helped the Cougars advance to the NJCAA Region VII Championship game where they finished as the runner-up.  Cleveland finished with an 11-7 record in the shortened year.

Dickson will have three years of eligibility left for Pikeville under the conditions of the this past dealing with the Covid pandemic.  The University of Pikeville competes in the Mid South Conference in the NAIA.  The Bears finished 12-12 this past season, going 10-10 in conference play.
