Lady Cougars Lose to Walters State in Straight Sets

With Sequoyah High School's women's volleyball team in attendance, Cleveland State Community College lost to Walters State in straight sets on Tuesday. It was a close game throughout between the two teams even though Cleveland State didn't own a lead until the middle of the third set. Walters State played a steady, consistent match as the Lady Cougars held on tight, only trailing by a point or two at times. When CSCC did take the lead, it only lasted a single play as the Lady Senators tied up the set on the very next volley. There were quite a few impressive, drawn-out volleys between the two squads, it just so happened that the ball touched down on Cleveland State's side more than Walters State's.

The Lady Cougars lost set one by a score of 25-21, trailing by no more than four points throughout the set. It seemed that Walters State was going to run away with the match, leading 17-13 but after two quick CSCC scores, including a hard kill by Ariana Smith, the Lady Cougars were able to again find themselves within reach, only trailing by two points. Walters State didn't let up, however, and rolled on to a 25-21 victory to take the first set. The second set started off similar, with the Lady Senators holding on to a slim lead. Eventually, Walters State began to really pull away, leading by as much as 12 points, cruising to a 25-13 victory. In what was the third and final set of the match, it was yet again a close set with Walters State owning a close lead. The two teams then began scoring back and forth, trading tied scores before CSCC finally took their first lead, 16-15 over the Lady Senators. Walters State responded on the next play, knotting the set up yet again and ended up securing a tight three-point lead, winning the set by a score of 25-22 and the match three sets to CSCC's none.

Cleveland State Community College is now 2-3 (0-1) on the season and will look to turn things around on the road against Covenant College on Wednesday, September 5th at 7:00 PM.
