Men's Golf Team Takes 5th Place at Maryville Invitational

The Cleveland State golf team completed their fall schedule this week with their best performance of the season at the Maryville College Invitational played at Egwani Farms Golf Course in Rockwood, Tennessee. After a slow start early in the first round, the Cougars rebounded to shoot 320 which landed them in 5th place after the first day.

"After the first four or five holes we were in 8th or 9th place, and I was very frustrated," said head coach Miles Moseley. "We have been doing very well in practice, and I hated to see the guys not being rewarded for that. But then suddenly it was like a switch flipped, and we started surging up the leaderboard."

Colbe Cagle shot -1 on his last nine holes to finish with a 76 while Jared Thomas shot +1 on his last eleven to finish with a 79.

Day 2 would see the Cougars shoot a team score of 310 led by Thomas' 72 and Cagle's 78. Zac Bombassi finished with a 79 and Seth Ward shot an 81 to round out the team score. Thomas' scores of 79 and 72 led the team for the tournament and brought him in at 11th place. Cagle's 76, 78 was second on the team. The team finished the tournament in 5th place out of a total of nine teams with a two day total of 630.

Individual results:

Jared Thomas: 151

Colbe Cagle: 154

Seth Ward: 162

Zac Bombassi: 163

Mike Renner: 179

Garrett Jones (playing as an individual): 188

"I'm really proud of the guys," added Coach Moseley. "Jared has looked really good in practice, and we knew it was just a matter of time before we saw that come out in tournament play. Several guys have made great improvements lately. I just wish it wasn't the last tournament of the fall. We know what we need to do; now it's just a matter of continuing to work hard and follow the plan. I can't wait for next spring to see where this goes."

The Cleveland State golf team resumes play early next year. The spring schedule will be released soon.
