
Cougars Baseball Wins Two of Three Against Chattanooga State
Cleveland State won the first and last games of their series against Chattanooga State this weekend.
The Cougars (21-19, 13-11) took game one 7-2 against the Tigers (27-19, 14-9), lost game two 6-1 and routed their rival 11-2 in the final game of the series.
Turner Junkins (5-4) earned the game one victory going 6.1 innings allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two. Tyler Pickens finished the game throwing the final 2.2 innings shutting out the Tigers allowing no hits while striking out three and walking a batter.
The Cougars bats put together 12 hits off Chattanooga State pitcher Reid Leonard (5-5) who pitched a complete game. Centerfielder Nate Dunfee hit his first homer of the season. Third baseman Evan Goins doubled twice driving in three runs.
Tigers pitcher Ian Sonner (6-1) also pitched a complete game earning the game two victory allowing one earned runs on four hits while striking out six and walking two. Designated hitter Ryan Long homered for the first time of the season plating the Cougars lone run.
Cleveland State pitcher Max Owens (4-3) threw his own complete game allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out 10 and not walking a batter.
Cleveland State's offense went 16-30 in the final game of the series. Leftfielder Aiden McClary was 3-4 homering, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Third baseman Evan Goins went 3-3, and second baseman Brogan Jones was 2-3 with each doubling and scoring twice. First baseman Nelson McKnight finished the game 3-4 with a double, three R.B.I. and two runs scored.
The Cougars go to Roane State (22-19, 8-13) for their next game this Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
