CLEVELAND – The Lady Cougars were looking for a much different result in their final home game of the season, but Roane State's rebounding skills and multiple trips to the free throw line were too much to overcome.
Twenty-three rebounds pushed Roane State past Cleveland State (12-12, 5-10) in a 73-59 game.
"We forced them into 18 turnovers, but got out-rebounded by 23," Cleveland State head coach Dan Lumpkin said. "They were 19-for-21 from the free throw line and we only had 11 free throw attempts."
Cleveland State was trailing Roane State 17-13 after the first quarter, but their deficit increased by six-points, 36-28 by halftime.
The Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Cougars 19-13 in the third quarter.
The home team matched their guests 18-18 in the fourth quarter, but there was no come-from-behind win to be had Wednesday night.
"We made a strong run in the fourth quarter with the full court press, but were unable to sustain the defense late in the scoring area," Lumpkin detailed.
Cleveland State went 11-for-14 from the free throw line, but hit only 38.2 percent of their field goals.
Abby Hubert had 14 points in the game, Leisa Butler had 11 points and three steals, and Julia Gaither finished with 10 points and three blocks.
The Lady Cougars travel to Walters State on Saturday.
