Cleveland State softball started their four game series vs Roane State winning a home conference doubleheader on Saturday March 18 with scores of 8-0 and 5-2.  The wins put the Cougars at a 9-0 conference record and 16-5 overall mark on the season.  Bailee Phillips won the first game while Hadley Burnette was victorious in the second game. 

 

Game One Recap… Saturday March 18

 

In winning her sixth game of the season Phillips gave up one hit in the first inning and that would be it in the five inning 8-0 shutout.

 

The Cougars scored two in the first, second third and fifth innings behind an 11 hit attack. Shelby Sullivan started with scoring with a two-run homerun in the first followed by a second inning two-run shot off the bat of Ally Starnes giving Cleveland State a 4-0 lead.

 

In the third Taylor Hancock singled home Emily Higgins who had walked and Kristen Fowler who had singled to increase the lead to six.  In the fifth Ally Starnes and Hancock led off with singles and were plated by Lexi Vogel and a single by Carlynn Atamaniuk to end the game.

 

Total Cougar hits came from Fowler, Ally Starnes, and Hancock with two each while Hope Ingle, Atamaniuk, Abby Starnes, Sullivan and Vogel each had one.

 

Game Two Recap… Saturday March 18

 

Burnette tossed seven innings giving up four hits and struck out 10 in winning her ninth game of the season 5-2.

 

Cleveland State started the scoring with three in their half of the second as they sent eight players to the plate.  Singles by Fowler and Ally Starnes led to a run scoring single off the bat of Vogel and a two-run single from Ingle.

 

Roane answered back with two in the top of the third to cut the Cougar led to 3-2.  Cleveland State finished the game scoring in the fourth as Ingle hit a homerun driving home Whitney Lee who had walked for the final score of 5-2.  Ingle's final RBI's gave her four on the game.

 

Cleveland State was good for seven hits one the game, two each from Ingle and Ally Starnes with one each from Abby Young, Fowler and Vogel

 

What's Next

 

The Cougars finish their four game series with Roane on Sunday March 19 with game start times of 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. 

 

Home games are played at Cougar Softball Field on the campus of Cleveland State.  Admission charge for the general public is $8 per person with no charge for Cleveland State students and staff.
