Cleveland State Softball won a home conference doubleheader on Monday April 10 by scores of 4-3 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game.  With a 16-5 conference record the Cougars are in third place as they have three more four game conference series remaining in the 2023 regular season.  Overall Cleveland State has a record of 25-10.

 

Game One Recap

 

In a game where the Cougars banged out 13 hits they managed four runs scoring one in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings to hold off Columbia State 4-3.  Bailee Phillips won her 10th game of the season striking out eight.

 

Carlynn Atamaniuk started the scoring in the first with a single and eventually came home on an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Abby Starnes.  Three straight singles in the third plated Shelby Sullivan who led off with a hit and was driven home by a Kristen Fowler single.  Hope Ingle led off the fourth with a single followed by another single by Atamaniuk and yet another single by Sullivan scoring Ingle.  In the sixth Cleveland State scored their final run of the game on a double by Fowler and an RBI single from Ally Starnes.

 

On the game Sullivan was a perfect 3-for-3 while Atamaniuk, Fowler and Ally Starnes had two hits each.  Adding to the hitting attack with one hit each were Ingle, Phillips, Abby Starnes and Lexi Vogel.

 

Game Two Recap

 

Ingle and Vogel were each 3-for-3 as the Cougars scored nine runs in five innings for the 9-1 victory.  Hadley Burnette won her 12th game of the year giving up just one earned run while striking out four.

 

Ingle doubled to lead off the Cougar bottom of the first and scored on a single by Atamaniuk giving Cleveland State a 1-0 lead.  After Columbia knotted the game at one in the top of the third the Cougars came in with four quick runs as Sullivan plated Ingle who had singled and Atamaniuk who had read base on a fielder's choice. Fowler ended the third inning scoring by doubling home Sullivan and Emily Higgins who had walked.

 

In the fourth with one out Vogel doubled, Ingle singled both scoring on a single from Abby Young.  The game ended in the fifth as Taylor Hancock hit an RBI single plating Higgins and Fowler who had walked scored on a Vogel hit.

 

Adding to the six hits between Ingle and Vogel were single hits from Atamaniuk, Young, Sullivan Fowler and Hancock.

 

What's Next

 

Cleveland State is set to travel to Walters State on Friday April 14 and Saturday April 15 for doubleheaders on both days.  Currently Walters is in first place in the TCCAA standings.
