Cleveland State softball finished their non-conference schedule undefeated.

The Cougars are a perfect 12-0 on the season, most recently winning a double header at Tennessee Wesleyan JV taking game one 5-3 and game two 8-5. Cleveland State completed the home and home stand sweeping the Bulldogs in their four-game series.

Game One Recap

Kylie Hayes (5-0) won her fifth game on the season pitching a complete game allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one.

The game was scoreless heading into the top of the third when the Cougars plated four runs. Torrey Cummings came across for the game's first run on a double steal. Kristen Fowler singled home Abby Murrill after she singled and stole second as part of the double steal. Layla Pettigrew added another single bringing home Fowler, and Ava Layne singled later scoring on an error.

In the fourth Fowler added another run to the Cougars lead on a triple scoring Murrill. Cleveland State put together 12 hits overall in the game with three of them coming off the bat of Fowler.

Tennessee Wesleyan scored their first run in the bottom of the fifth and added another two in the final inning, but couldn't overcome their five-run deficit.

Game Two Recap

Kadence Brewer (5-0) also pitched a complete game allowing five earned runs on ten hits striking out two and walking two.

The Cougars offense started early in game two scoring five runs in the first. The first two came from a wild pitch.
Whitney Lee doubled home Morgan Willingham and Pettigrew, then Lee was driven home on a Kendyl Phillips single to left field.

The Cougars plated another run going up 6-0 in the top of the second inning when Layne doubled home Murrill.

The Bulldogs put in three in the bottom of the third before Cleveland State added another two when Layne and Fowler plated Cummings and Murrill after they each singled. Tennessee Wesleyan scored another two in the final inning, but came up short again.  Cleveland State finished with 15 hits in the game.

What's Next

Next on the schedule for Cougar Softball is a home double header hosting Jackson State Community College (4-8) in their conference opener on Saturday March 2 with game time starts of noon and 2 p.m. EST. Games three and four of the series will be played on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. as well.

Games are played on the Cleveland State campus at the Cougar Softball Field. Admission charge is
$8 per person with no charge to Cleveland State students, faculty and staff.
