Walters State Secures Two Close Games at Cleveland State

Cleveland State couldn't get past the Senators pitching.

Walters State (22-2, 13-1) features the top statistical pitcher in the conference and another starter that is undefeated, and it showed in their 5-0 and 6-3 wins over the Cougars (18-8, 6-8).

Game One

Offense was tough to come by in the first game against the Senators.

Tori Coffman (14-1) pitched a complete game two hitter striking out 17 while walking one shutting out the Cougars. Coffman has a .5 earned run average on the season, four more wins and nearly one hundred more strike outs than any other pitcher in the conference.

The Senators jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning, but it took until the fourth to score two more, then scored an insurance run in the sixth.

Kristen Fowler and Morgan Willingham put together the Cougars only two hits of the game with Fowler also walking going 1-2 against Coffman.

Kylie Hayes (9-4) suffered the loss, but pitched well allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking three.

Game Two

The second game went better for the Cougars offense, but it wasn't able to give Hayley Lawing (7-0) her first loss of the year.

Cleveland State had eight hits with four of those coming from Fowler and Willingham. Fowler went 2-4 with an RBI while Willingham was 2-3 with a run scored.

Torrey Cummings doubled along with Willingham. Whitney Lee and Kendall Phillips also drove in a run.

Kadence Brewer (7-4) pitched the first 5.2 innings allowing six earned runs on seven hits while striking out one and walking three. Hayes finished out the final 1.1 inning not allowing a hit or run while walking one.
