For the second double header in a row Cleveland State knocked a team out of first place in the conference.

On Wednesday the Cougars (31-11, 19-11) took a game from Walters State (35-7, 25-5) causing them to fall from the top of the standings, and this time Cleveland State defeated Chattanooga State (31-11, 25-5) putting them back down to second place.

The Tigers pitcher Jessica Cord (11-0) pitched a complete game one hitter allowing no earned runs while striking out five and not walking a batter remaining undefeated on the season and helping her team to a 7-1 win in the first game of the double header.

Kylie Hayes (15-7) suffered the loss also going the complete game allowing three earned runs on 12 hits while striking out four and walking three.

The Cougars committed three errors in the game contributing to four of the Tigers runs. Ava Layne was the only Cleveland State batter to record a hit off of Cord.

Game two of the double header was a back-and-forth battle with the Cougars coming out on top at the end 5-4.

Cleveland State scored the game's first two runs in the bottom of the first before the Tigers tied it up in the third. The Cougars went back on top 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, then Chattanooga State tied in the top of the sixth before Cleveland put up the game winning run in the bottom half of the inning.

Kadence Brewer (14-4) picked up the victory pitching the complete game allowing four earned runs on nine hits while striking out one and walking one.

Kristen Fowler hit a two-run homer. Morgan Willingham hit a two-run double. Desiree Nance doubled driving in a run. Torrey Cummings scored twice while Layla Pettigrew and Layne each came across the plate once.

The two teams will face off again in a double header on Tuesday, this time at Chattanooga State with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
