Harrell Named NJCAA All-American

The NJCAA announced their All-Americans for Women's Basketball on Tuesday.

Asjah Harrell was named to the 2019-20 NJCAA Women's Basketball All-American Second Team, becoming Cleveland State's first All-American team member in any sport since Jamesha Mosley of Women's Basketball was named to the team in the 2014-2015 season.

Harrell averaged 20.2 points and 5.6 assists per game on the season, which were third and first in the TCCAA respectively, and broke six different single-season program records. She was also the one of just three TCCAA players named to the team, and the only one named to the first or second team.

Head Coach Evelyn Thompson: "I'm extremely proud of and happy for Asjah. She certainly deserves this award. Her hard work, her leadership, and her focus this year is rewarded by her making this All-American team. It is a huge deal. When I went to recruit Asjah, the first day I saw her, I told her if she came to Cleveland State, she would be an All-American. All she needed to do was believe in the process, and that process landed her on the team. I knew from the beginning she would be something special. It was the expectation, first, her being an exceptional leader and scorer on our team and an integral part of our success and second, to prove on a larger scale to be selected for Conference Most Valuable Player and Freshman of the Year and then to expand it out into a greater arena as one of the best players in this country. I'm excited for her and excited for her teammates, without them, she wouldn't have been able to do all of the things she's done. They pushed her in practice and made sure she would be successful on the court. Our coaching staff made sure she was prepared to be successful in the game. And the college created an environment for success. This speaks volumes to our culture and our players' dedication to our program here at Cleveland State. I think Asjah will leave Cleveland State as the best player to come through these doors."

Athletic Director Mike Policastro: "I wanted to congratulate Asjah on her outstanding season. Her work this year has been recognized in the conference and nationally. I am excited that she received this honor."
