Cougars Lock Down Jackson State Late to Pick Up Victory
The Cleveland State defense stepped up in the fourth quarter to help secure a road win.
The Cougars (6-13, 4-8) allowed Jackson State (10-7, 5-7) just six points in the final frame on path to a 57-54 victory.
"A much needed and well deserved win," head coach Ayana McWilliams said. "We've been struggling to put together a complete 40 minutes, and today's win was a byproduct of that."
The Cougars got both Addison Garner and Erin Dixon back for the game helping with their depth and to share minutes. Garner played just 14 minutes, but scored 10 points.
Maiya Moore led all scorers on the night with 18. Ziara Thompson and Mar'Nazha Houston each finished with 11 points while Thompson also brought down 10 rebounds for a double-double.
"The girls showed a ton of fight and toughness throughout," McWilliams said. "I'm extremely happy for them!"
Marihya Hart scored a team high 17 points for the Green Jays while Brooklynn Spates was the only other Jackson State player to score in double figures finishing with 16 on the night.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Cleveland State. The Cougars travel next to play at second place Chattanooga State (12-7, 8-3). Game time is scheduled for this Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
