Cleveland State Baseball got back to their winning ways on Wednesday, sweeping Volunteer State in a non-conference doubleheader. The wins bring Cleveland State to 4-2 on the year.

GAME 1-

In the first game, the Cougars' bats were red hot as they defeated the Pioneers 10-5 behind a six run fourth inning. Defensive hitter Reese Plemons was key in the win, going two-for-four with two RBI and a run scored in the contest. Second baseman Courtney Payne also drove in two runs, walked three times and stole a base. Both catcher Ryan McCarthy and third baseman Jacob Robinson posted two-hit games and drove in an RBI a piece. On the mound, Daniel Crabtree notched his second win of the season behind his six innings of three earned run, three strikeout baseball. 

GAME 2-

In the second game, the Cleveland State offense continued its tear, defeating Vol State 9-4. Right fielder Stokes Needham drove in three runs for the Cougars while also scoring a run of his own, while Robinson drove in another pair of runs and scored two while also going three-for-four from the plate. Left fielder Bryce Jenkins also recorded a multi-hit game, going two-for-two with an RBI, a run scored, a walk and a stolen base. 

Owen Clark was also crucial in the Cougars' victory and earned the win, striking out 10 batters while only allowing one earned run on one hit in four innings of work. Out of the pen, Javier Favela had another solid outing, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters in an inning pitched.

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, when they will travel just south on I-75 to square off with the Tigers of Chattanooga State. First pitch in the doubleheader between the two teams is set for 12:00 PM.
