The Cougars put up 20 runs in their double header sweeping BCA from Knoxville this
afternoon.
Cleveland State's pitching staff also had a strong day walking no batters in either game.
"I thought we came out and played well all day," head baseball coach Mike Policastro said.
"Ben Smith and Drake Randolph gave us quality starts, we played well defensively and our
offense put good at bats together."
Ben Smith started the day pitching a perfect game through five innings striking out six and
earning the victory. Carson Mitchell closed the game allowing two hits while striking out two
in the final inning.
Third baseman Jacob Robinson hit a solo homerun in the second inning to start the slug fest.
Left fielder Bryson Trammell and second baseman Jaylen Jones each doubled.
Centerfielder Bryce Burkey drove in three runs while shortstop Rhett Hammontree and right
fielder Reggie Cooper each batted in two. The Cougars also benefitted from 11 walks in the
game.
Cleveland State ended the game by way of the ten-run rule in the sixth inning. Game two was
similar with the Cougars winning 10-1.
Drake Randolph started the second game earning the victory pitching four innings while
striking out eight and allowing one run on six hits. Andrew Kribbs, Brycen Denton and Ben
Norton each threw one inning allowing no runs and no hits combining to strike out another
four batters.
Jones lead off the game with a home run. Third baseman Colby Taylor and first baseman
Brock Harvey hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning.
Designated hitter Ryan Stephens, right fielder Ryan Langford and centerfielder Cory Fields
each doubled in the game.
"We had a chance to give guys at bats that needed some, so it was a productive day, and we
should be able to carry that into the weekend against Roane State," Policastro said.
Cleveland State looks to improve on their 3-2 conference record in the next series hosting
Roane State. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 1 pm with a double header slated to start
at noon on Saturday.
