Cougar Baseball Loses Conference Series to Chattanooga State

Cougars fall 10-7 to Raiders

Cougar Baseball lost a three game road conference series to Chattanooga State with doubleheader losses of 4-0 and 11-1 on Saturday April 1 followed by a single nine inning game loss of 10-7 on Sunday April 2.

 

Cleveland State now has a conference record of 8-6 and an overall season mark of 18-13.

 

Game One Recap… Saturday April 1

 

Six scattered hits in seven innings were all Cleveland State could muster in the 4-0 loss as Chattanooga State scored in the first, third and fifth innings.  The Cougar hitting was led by Colby Taylor who banged out two hits while Rhett Hammontree, Jaylen Jones, Bryson Trammell and Bryce Burkey each had one.

 

Cleveland State used two pitchers as the Cougars played error free ball but could never mount a rally.

 

Game Two Recap… Saturday April 1

 

In a game that was virtually over at the end of one inning Chattanooga State scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning in a game that went six innings in the eventual Cougar loss of 11-1.

 

On the game Cleveland State managed five hits, two by AJ Swader and one each off the bats of Hammontree, Riley Orr and Ryan Stephens.  The Cougars lone run came on a solo homerun by Hammontree.

 

Game Three Recap… Sunday April 2

 

Cleveland State found their bats in game three banging out 13 hits that led to seven runs.  The Cougars had a short lived lead of 1-0 after their half of the first when Hammontree who had singled came around to score on an Orr groundout.  Chattanooga State answered immediately with three in the bottom of the first only to see Cleveland come back with three of their own in the top of the second in taking a 4-3 lead.

 

In the top of the second Burkey doubled driving home Cannon Stafford who had doubled and Taylor who had singled to knot the score at three all.  Jones gave the Cougars the lead with an RBI single plating Burkey.

 

Chattanooga scored four in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead that it would never relinquish.  The Cougars did rally with two in the sixth as Orr walked, Jacob Robinson doubled with both coming in to score on a Taylor single.  In the seventh Cleveland State scored their seventh run of the 10-7 loss when Swader singled driving home Burkey who had singled to start the inning.

 

For the Cougars who outhit Chattanooga 13-9, Jones had three hits while Hammontree, Taylor and Burkey each had two.  Players with one hit each included Swader, Robinson, Trammell and Stafford.  On the game Cleveland State used four pitchers while Chattanooga State ran five out to the mound.

 

 

 

 

What's Next

 

The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday April 5 as they play host to BCA in a doubleheader with game times slated for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.  Games are played at Cougar Baseball field on the campus of Cleveland State.
