The Cougars were down 10 runs after the first inning.
Gordon State College (4-1) put together nine hits in the bottom half of the first and finished with 17, ultimately putting Cleveland State (1-3) away 13-0.
"Gordon came out swinging in the first inning," head coach Michael Policastro said. "It's hard to get any momentum after that."
Cleveland State came out of the game with four hits and left seven runners on base. Gordon State left 13 runners on base, but nearly hit .500 going 17-35 on the game overall.
Colin Eaton earned the victory pitching six innings striking out six and walking one while allowing two hits.
The Cougars Taylor Vinson was a bright spot pitching the final 1.2 innings allowing no runs on one hit while striking out one and not walking a batter.
Cleveland State takes the field again tomorrow for their home opener hosting Vincennes University (1-0) in a double header. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
