Casteel Throws No Hitter, Then Cougars Win in Extras of Double Header

Cooper Casteel threw a no-hitter in game one, then the Cougars walked it off in extra innings in game two of today's double header.

Cleveland State (17-8, 4-4) needed just two runs for the victory to start the day, but had to bang out 13 to take game two against Jackson State (12-9-1, 4-4).

Game One

Casteel came out dealing striking out 11 while walking three batters in his complete game seven inning no-hitter shutout performance.

Riley Orr tripled as the lead-off batter in the bottom of the first, then Evan Goins hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring him home for the game's first run. Dylan Owens also hit a sacrifice fly to center field with his scoring Bryson Trammell in the fourth.

The Cougars couldn't put any more runs across and had just four hits in the game off Green Jays pitcher Kyle Lambert, but that's all they needed to come out on top.

Game Two

Game two was a completely different ball game than game one.

Jackson State scored three in the top of the first, then Cleveland State put up four in their half of the inning. The Cougars then put up three in the bottom of the third and another three in the bottom of the fourth and were a few runs away from ending the ball game early via the ten-run rule.

Then, the Green Jays put up a five spot in the fifth and scored another three in the sixth to take the lead before Cleveland State went back on top in the bottom of the sixth scoring two.

Jackson State then scored one in the top of the seventh and held the Cougars scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to send it to extra innings.

Cleveland State pitching allowed just four hits, but combined for ten walks including five hit batters to keep the Green Jays in the game.

Jeremy Crider earned the win pitching the top of the eighth allowing no runs on one hit while striking out one and walking none. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth Orr hit a single to left field scoring Will Webb to walk-off with a win.

Cleveland State banged out 14 hits in the game with Orr having four of those while also driving in four runs. Evan Goins went 3-4 with 2 RBI while Hunter Ryan and Owens each went 2-2 combining to drive in another three.

Game three of the conference series will take place tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon.
