Cougars Win Series Opener, But Lose Double Header to Chattanooga State

Cleveland State doubled up the Tigers in game one, but couldn't pull out either game in their double header.

The Cougars (26-12, 10-8) won game one 10-5 against Chattanooga State (34-8, 13-5), but the Tigers took game two 7-4 and game three 7-6.

Game One

Bryson Trammell hit two homers in game one, the first was a three-run dinger that went well over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the first for the first runs scored in the series.

Kain Collins hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the bottom of the second bringing in Nick Iezzi to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead.

Chattanooga State put up their first two runs in the top of the third on a single by Bryson Jenkins. In the bottom half of the inning Evan Goins drove home Will Webb on a single.

In the bottom of the fourth Webb grounded out to shortstop bringing home Iezzi, then Cannon Stafford singled home Collins. Goins then scored in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch to give the Cougars a commanding 8-2 advantage.

The Tigers made the game interesting scoring three in the sixth and seventh innings cutting the Cougars lead down to three runs.

Then, in the bottom of the eighth, Trammell and Riley Orr hit back-to-back solo shots to give the Cougars a five-run lead.

Cooper Casteel (3-0) earned the victory pitching 5.2 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out nine and walking four.

Game Two

Cleveland State scored first on a Webb sacrifice fly to right field plating Collins in the bottom of the first, but didn't score another run until the final inning.

Chattanooga State scored seven unanswered runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Cade Chamlee hit a two-run homer in the third and Jenkins hit a solo homer in the fifth.

The Cougars fought back in the last inning scoring three runs on a solo homerun by Iezzi, a Collins triple that brought home Ty Nettles and a Webb double that scored Collins, but it wasn't enough to overcome their six-run deficit.

Zach Lear (2-0) picked up the win pitching six innings allowing no earned runs on four hits while striking out five and walking two.

Game Three

Cleveland State took a four-run lead into the fifth inning before the Tigers put up six in the fifth to take a one-run lead.

Iezzi started it off for the Cougars doubling home Orr in the bottom of the second. Hunter Ryan doubled bringing in Orr in the fourth, and Collins drove in Harrison Garrett and Ryan later in the inning.

With the bases loaded in the fifth Collin Trevison singled in a run. Then C.J. Morro doubled clearing the bases to tie the game. Jenkins then doubled driving in another two runs later in the inning.

Cleveland State did tie the game back up in the top of the sixth with Orr grounding out bringing home Trammell and Goins hitting a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Stafford.

In the top of the sixth Chamlee singled in Trevison for the final run scored in the series.

The Cougars will play a non-conference game when they hit the field next on Tuesday at Calhoun Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
