Cougars Defeat Dyersburg State in Game One, But Lose Both of Double Header

Cleveland State won the first one, but lost games two and three in their conference series at Dyersburg State Community College (12-10, 3-3).

The Cougars (14-8, 2-4) took game one 6-4, lost the first of a double header 8-6 and went down in a walk-off in game three 5-4.

Game One

Cooper Casteel started the series for Cleveland State. The series first run was scored in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch, then remained scoreless until the fifth inning.

In the top half of the fifth Kain Collins singled home Dylan Owens, then scored on a Bryson Trammell single. The Eagles put up a run to tie it in the bottom of the fifth, then scored another in the bottom of the sixth ending Casteel's day on the mound. He went 5.1 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Cannon Stafford hit a solo homerun in the top of the eighth to tie the game, then the Cougars scored another three in the top of the ninth for insurance. Eric Enerlich (3-0) earned the victory in his .2 innings of work striking out one allowing no runs or hits. Logan Bryson picked up his fourth save closing the game allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out one in the bottom of the ninth.

Game Two

Cleveland State struck first again in game two, this time on a Riley Orr single in the second inning bringing home Ryan Langford. Dyersburg State scored twice in the bottom half of the second.

The third inning saw two runs scored by the Cougars with Langford singling home Ty Nettles, then Evan Goins scored on a single hit by Hunter Ryan. The Eagles then went ahead with a three-run bottom half of the third.

Dyersburg State scored three more in their half of the fourth and fifth innings, while the Cougars plated one in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Zane Brown (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season pitching 2.2 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out two in the start.

Game Three

Austin Breedlove (3-1) started game three and allowed one earned run on three hits in five innings striking out eight and walking four.

The Eagles put up two runs in the bottom of the second and added another in the fifth inning. Cleveland State did not score until the top half of the sixth when Stafford singled home Collins.

The Cougars then went ahead in the top half of the final inning when Collins hit a three-run shot over the fence. Bryson came in to attempt to get his second save in two days, but Dyersburg State put up two to take the win on a walk-off single.

What's Next

Next up for the Cougars is a non-conference game tomorrow at home hosting Gordon State College (14-11). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
