Cougar Women Off and Running… Win First Game of the 2022-2023 Season

The Cleveland State Women's Basketball team started the 2022-2023 season with a home victory over Snead State 72-44 on Tuesday November 1 as Tionna Baker scored 24 points to lead the way with four Cougars scoring in double figures.

 

The Cougars outscored Snead in quarter one 23-9 and 15-7 in the second quarter for a halftime lead of 38-16.  Cleveland State kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter with a 10 point advantage of 18-8 and then cruised to the final score win.  Laney Bone, Derriona Salter and Destiny Remy threw down 15 points each for the balanced Cougar scoring attack.

 

A strong offensive showing included 16 team assists paced by Baker and Janae Charles with four each while Latisha Parris and Salter each had three.  The Cougars shot 70% from the charity strip as Baker was 9-11.

 

Coach Thompson an all-star collegiate player in her own right stressed defense for her Cleveland State Cougars pointing out that hard nose defense would lead to a more effective offensive outcome.  The Cougars had 43 rebounds led by Baker who pulled down 12 with Remy and Anika Smith each grabbing six.  Cleveland State's scrambling defense turned into 20 steals led by Charles with 5 followed by Salter and Baker with four each.  Bone and Smith each had two.

 

With three days of practice until the next scheduled game the Cougars are set to play Wallace State Community College-Hanceville on Saturday November 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium on the campus of Cleveland State. 

 

Admission is an $8 per person charge for the public with no charge for Cleveland State students.
