Women’s Basketball Back on Winning Track…Wins vs Volunteer State

The Cougar Women launched back into the win column with a conference home win on Saturday February 4 beating Volunteer State 76-40.  Cleveland State maintained their hold on second place in the TCCAA with a 10-3 conference record and overall mark of 13-5.

Jumping off to a 15-13 first quarter lead the Cougars won every quarter holding Volunteer to four points in quarter number four.  Cleveland with four players in double figures were led by Laney Bone at 20, Derriona Salter who dropped in 18, Latisha Parris with 15 while conference scoring leader Tionna Baker went for 15.

Cougar Head Coach Evelyn Thompson said the following: "Tonight's game versus Vol. State was a test of our resilience. I challenged this team to step up and compete. The first half was not what I expected, but we stepped it up in the second half. I was happy that we had 4 players in double figures."

Thompson mentioned the four players in double figures while specifically talking about two players in particular:  "Derriona Salter really stepped up her game tonight, and played at the level that is expected. However the real difference-maker in the game was Shanial McCoy. Her defensive intensity set the tone. When she came into the game, we had only a twelve point lead. She provided the spark that allowed us to stretch the lead. I am so proud of her. She also scored a couple of baskets."

With a week off from play Cleveland State goes on the road to play conference rival Jackson State on Saturday February 11 with a start time of 3:00 p.m.  Currently Jackson is in the middle of the conference standings with a 5-5 record.
