Cleveland State (5-4) won 9-1 and lost 5-3 finishing the Millington games on Saturday February 19 going 2-2 on the two day schedule. The Cougars put up six runs in the 3rd inning vs. Southwestern Illinois College in game one of the final day only to see East Mississippi Community College rally in the second game with four late inning runs.
Cougar starter Bryce Jenkins won the game, twirling 5 lights out innings in the 9-1 win vs. Southwestern giving up one hit while striking out eight. Trey Scott and Drake Holland finished the game effectively with one inning each.
Cleveland State banged out 10 hits on the game led by second baseman Jaylen Jones who was 3-for-3 on the game including a homerun and scoring three runs. Catcher Ryan Stephens belted a 2-run homer in the 3rd giving him a hit total of two. Yosuany Herrera had two hits while Andre Tarver doubled and Brandon LeJeune and Bryce Burkey each chipped in with singles.
In game two vs. East Mississippi, Cougar starter Owen Clark took a no decision while pitching 6 strong innings striking out eight. Cleveland State scored single runs in the 3rd, 5th and 6th innings on six hits. AJ Swader blasted a homerun while Jenkins and Jones each had a single and a double with Burkey kicking in with a single.
The split on day two followed a late night contest on Friday February 18 as Cleveland State lost to Iowa Central 4-1 in a well-played game.
Cougar baseball is scheduled to travel to east Tennessee to play Maryville College in a doubleheader on Tuesday February 22.
